Headlight maintenance tips
In many ways car safety starts with the headlights, because they not only help you see the road you are driving your car, but also indicate to other drivers and other users of the road, that you are in front of them and that you are either moving, standing or about to turn. So keeping your headlights bright and clean is a vital part of how safe you will be while on the road, which is why here are some tips on how to perform maintenance on your headlights, so they always are ready for the road.
A recent research fount, that one of the most common reasons for accidents during the nighttime is bad headlights, weather they are improperly lit, cloudy or simply blow out. On top of that dirty and very yellow toned headlights also severely reduce the visibility the headlights provide, meaning that if you don’t take care of your headlights, you are more likely to get into an accident. So what to do to take care of your headlights?
One of the main things is to replace your headlights as soon as they start to dim, meaning that as soon as you notice that your headlights aren’t as bright, you should change the bulbs. On top of that also better swap both headlights on the front and the back of the car at the same time. The bulbs need to be exchanged in pairs in order to create even lighting and therefore even viability on both sides, so the light of your headlight doesn’t distract you from the traffic that is in front of you.
Lucky for us changing the bulbs of car headlights usually doesn’t require us to go to mechanic, because we can do it ourselves. But if you do it for the first time of your new car, then I would suggest to still consult your mechanic or at least check the owner’s manual, because that will allow you to change the bulbs easily and without there being a chance of you breaking something.
On top of that I would also suggest to restore the headlight lenses when they get cloudy or become faded. You can do it yourself or go to a specialist and have him do it, just make sure that it is done, since cloudy lenses can also worsen the quality of light of your headlights causing you to not see the road as good as you would, if the lenses of the headlights would be new and shiny.
And lastly just make sure that the headlights are clean. Since the headlights sit quite close to the road, they often get covered by dirt, dead bugs and such, so clean the headlights, and the turn signals off, when they get dirty. Sometimes dirty headlights is the reason why suddenly the light form the headlights is dimmed or not as good, so keep them clean as you would keep your windshield clean and you should be good to drive in any conditions without any problems.
