Review

OTC 2004 engine hoist

OTC 2004 engine hoist has the total lifting capacity of 4000 lb (2 ton). You can lift engines with all sorts of capacities, even larger v6 and v8 engines with this hoist. OTC hoist can be folded for more convenient storage. You can fold the legs of the hoist up and move the boom down, so the hoist will take up a lot less space. This is useful for those that work in a small workshop or a garage where every centimeter of space is important.

Frame

The frame of the lifter is made form a high tensile, durable steel that will handle loads up to 4000 lb (2 tons) without any problems. On the sides of the main frame there are extra braces that improves the durability of the frame even more. You cannot lift objects heavier than 4000 lb (2 ton) by any means, as parts of the engine hoist might fail which can result in damaged hoist and object lifted and can even cause injuries to the person operating the hoist. Also remember, if you extend the boom, the maximum lifting capacity is going to decrease, so you have to take into account also this factor, when lifting more heavier loads with an extended boom.

To fold the engine hoist for storage first lower the boom to the maximum lowest position. Remove all locking pins from the legs of the hoist and move legs from horizontal to vertical position. Secure legs in a vertical position by reinstalling the locking pins.

The frame comes in a grey color, which at least gives a different look than usual hoists in bright red and orange colors.

Jack

OTC 2004 engine lifter is equipped with a high quality hydraulic jack which helps to lift loads up to 4000 lb (2 ton). Before lifting the load make sure that load is properly attached to the engine hoist. To lift a load first close the bleed valve that is located on the bottom of the jack or else the pumping of the jack won’t do nothing and load is not going to be lifted. Once the valve is fully closed you can place the lifting bar into the jack, start pumping and hydraulic ram is going to lift the load. Remember to be extra careful with the lifted load and move the hoist slowly, avoiding any unnecessary movement and wobbling of the hoist. When load is moved to an engine stand and need to be lowered, slowly release the bleed valve by turning it in the opposite direction than closing, for most engine lifters this means turning the valve counter clockwise.

Legs and wheels

OTC engine hoist has got total of 6 casters which are located below the legs of the hoist – 4 casters under the main frame of the hoist and 2 casters are located in the front of the legs. 4 casters that are located under the main frame can be turned 360 degrees around which allows more movement of the hoist. 2 casters located on the front of the legs can only be moved to front and back. 4 rear wheels are sized 5-7/8 inches (14.9 cm) and 2 front wheels are in 3-1/2 inch (8.9 cm) size.

The legs of the hoist can be removed and folded. When legs of the hoist are position upright, no load can be applied to the hoist or else the tool might fail. After placing the legs in a horizontal working position remember to secure them to the hoist with locking pins, so legs does not start to fold in the lifting process.

The OTC 2004 engine hoist can be used only on a level surface, preferably hard floor, to allow easier movement of casters when hoist carries load.

Boom

The boom of the hoist can be extended and has got 4 adjustment positions:

  1. 2 ton (4000 lb);
  2. 1.5 ton (3000 lb);
  3. 1 ton (2000 lb);
  4. 1/2 ton (1000 lb).

The length of the boom in unextended position is 25 inches (63.5 cm), and in furthest extend position – 46 inches (116.8 cm). At the end of the boom there is a chain with a hook where you can attach engine lifting slings or an engine leveler.

Size and weight

The dimensions of a folded OTC 2004 engine hoist are: 61x9x29.5 inches (154x23x75 cm). The weight of the hoist is 243 lb (110 kg).
